About Athearn Diesel Locos:
Irv Athearn fell into the selling and retail of model trains somewhat by accident. In the early 1940’s he decided to place an ad for his extensive 0-scale railroad train layout to sell. He valued the trains at $10,000 (Alot of money in those days!). The response to his ad was so great that he decided selling model trains just might be the way to go.
Mr. Athearn continued to sell train products out of his mother’s house through most of the 1940’s. He became a fulltime model train retailer in 1946 and opended a place in Hawthorne, CA in 1948. This is also the same year that he first offered HO kits. He is well known for being the precursor to the ready to roll line of model trains by introducing the a reefer kit which included a preassembled body and spot-welded underframe.
Throughout the ongoing years, Athearn Model Trains came up with alot of exciting innovations for this enjoyable hobby. In 1956, he released the EMD F7 diesel utilizing the revolutionary “Hi-F” drive, and, in 1973, he introduced the F45 and FP45, among the first model locomotives to include flywheels on the motor shaft.
Irv Athearn passed away in 1991, yet the Athearn company he started continues. The new owners took control of Athearn in 1994, yet they were smart enough to continue Irv Athearn’s pledge to always offer high quality model train products at reasonable prices.
